art bazaar

Lyons Wier Gallery is helping shake the sleepy summer season by offering an open call to artists on a first-come first-serve basis. The rotation changes every weekend and thus far seems to be a hit.

icp triennial

The International Center of Photography recently announced the artists to be included in its third ICP Triennial of Photography and Video. 34 artists from 11 countries will be represented. What is truly noteworthy, however, is that of the 34 artists, 24 of them are women. That's 70%.

art institute

Renzo Piano's Modern Wing recently opened at the Art Institute of Chicago, and it is stunning. The 264,000 square-foot addition is airy and light, and makes the Art Institute the second largest museum in the United States.

I've been checking out the galleries of the Lower East Side. One particularly nice discovery is On Stellar Rays, a space currently showing LOVER, a group show curated by Kate Gilmore and Candice Madey that features over 30 artists.

Karen Margolis and Daniel Zeller are sharing an exhibit at Dieu Donne, a space "dedicated to the creation, promotion, and preservation of contemporary art in the hand papermaking process." The show is quite beautiful, and only open for a few more days.

barbara friedman

Overlook Paintings, Barbara Friedman's exhibit at Michael Steinberg Fine Art, employs "a nearly vertiginous vertical format" which "invokes the panoramic vision of the Hudson River painters of the 19th century." See it before it closes.
