Michael Werner Gallery presents
The Unexpected New: Late Paintings of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. The show, which takes its title "from the artist's own words, 'Das ungewohnte Neue', a phrase he used in a 1924 letter to his brother explaining the shock with which the public received these new and unusual paintings", focuses on works made from 1921-1935. In them one will recognize how "line and movement continued to be of paramount importance and were increasingly mined for their inherent formal, rather than descriptive, qualities". It is a nice show by an important, yet overlooked, artist.
