gabi hamm

I like good exhibitions by painters, like Gabi Hamm's show at Perry Rubenstein. Hamm's work is dreamy with a sense of time, and reflects mood in a universal softness. This is her first solo show in New York.

neo rauch

I really like the Neo Rauch show at David Zwirner. His work captivates, and is furthered by the enigmatic narrative. His world is dark and mysterious, and worth exploring. A living virtuoso.

The show at Kathryn Markel looks interesting. Featuring seven artists "whose use of color is a central aspect of their artistic practice", the show will attempt to reintroduce this issue back into the discussion.

ernst ludwig kirchner

Michael Werner Gallery presents The Unexpected New: Late Paintings of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. The show, which takes its title "from the artist's own words, 'Das ungewohnte Neue', a phrase he used in a 1924 letter to his brother explaining the shock with which the public received these new and unusual paintings", focuses on works made from 1921-1935. In them one will recognize how "line and movement continued to be of paramount importance and were increasingly mined for their inherent formal, rather than descriptive, qualities". It is a nice show by an important, yet overlooked, artist.

It appears as though the show Evolution at Max Lang, which "examines questions of biology and the body in contemporary sculptural practices", includes one of Wim Delvoye's tattooed stuffed pigs. Brilliant.

There are several good shows in Chelsea right now, among them Robert Therrien's at Gagosian. It's whimsical and fun, yet a bit eerie. Childhood revisited.
