alberto burri

Alberto Burri, the late Italian Arte Povera artist, will have the first New York exhibition of his work in over twenty years at Mitchell-Innes & Nash in December. The show will span his entire career, with a large amount of works on view from the estate of his widow, Minsa Burri. Burri, a key figure in the Arte Povera movement, displayed an extraordinary "command of a wide variety of materials, including burlap, sack cloth, pumice, tar, plastic, Cellotex (an industrial material), ceramic and glue." A medic in World War II, much of his work suggests the horror of bloody wounds suffered on the battlefield.

wade guyton

Wade Guyton uses an Epson large format printer to create black monochrome paintings. This inkjet work "transcribes a visual record of the printer's actions: the trace of movement of the print heads, the varying states of their clogged-ness, the track marks of the wheels on wet ink all mixed with the scratches and smears on the paintings from being dragged across the floor to be fed back again into the printer." The results are grotesquely stunning with their raw and primitive delicacies. It's the coolest show I've seen in Chelsea this season.

The Postwar and Contemporary Auction at Sotheby's this week garnered $315.9 million, prooving that the art market bubble has yet to burst. Numerous artists set auction records for their prices, with the highest of the evening going to Francis Bacon's "Second Version of Study for Bullfight No. 1" (1969) which went for a cool $45.9 million. A $million is the new $ten thousand.

triple candie

Triple Candie is a super great gallery that is showing two interesting shows right now. In the main space is "Welcome To Tomorrowland", an exhibition of large-scale architectural models that envision the gallery's future home. In the Project Space is an installation dedicated to "The Matthew Higgs Society". Both are great and should be seen. And both are closing soon.

kara walker

Kara Walker seems to be everywhere these days. Now you can see her at the Whitney too. "My Complement, My Enemy, My Oppressor, My Love" will be on view until Februray 2008. As the press release states, "The intricacy of her imagination and her diligent command of art history have caused her silhouettes to cast shadows on conventional thinking about race representation in the context of discrimination, exclusion, sexual desire, and love." Ms. Walker is one of the most important artists of our day.
